One of the longest running and highest-profile weekly shows in the electronic music world has switched up the norms this week by hosting a next-gen Chase & Status showcase for their ‘RTRN II JUNGLE’ project.
The D&B superstars have taken the decision to “get back to their roots” after a solid run as one of the biggest names in the commercial music industry over the last few years. The guys angered many long-term fans by putting their emphasis into records more suitable for the mainstream, but it appears that an imminent return to the world where they cut their trade is on the cards.
Back To Your Roots
Those that remember the first-gen version of C&S will recall a duo that demanded top spot on any and many of the biggest Drum & Bass lineups around the world. Before chart success and fame, the productions and live DJ shows were regarded as one of the main attractions in the D&B world. Their hyperactive, aggressive style and rapid mixing were the antithesis of their recent projects, but recent developments indicate a return to the old format.
On Top Of The World
This weekend’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix was a rare break from the dominant House and Techno roster that usually frequents the show as Chase & Status delivered a slamming mix of upfront D&B, Jungle and and a slew of modern remakes of heavy-hitters that the group would have helped to break back in their first incarnation. To mark the occasion, the show was broadcast from the sky from a pod on the iconic London Eye. It would have been a moment of clarity for Chase & Status as they looked over the city within sight of a library of clubs that they would have cut their teeth and grown this project which has transcended genre over the years. We can only presume that the reimagined underground ethos would have been the perfect backdrop for this moment as they plan their future back in one of the global hubs for the Drum & Bass world.
