With a sound focused on Swing Tech, which combines House music with Glitch Hop and 1920s Swing, the San Franciscan duo has been making waves in the music industry for years. Hi SpekrFreks! How are you doing?
We’re doing great, thanks for asking!
Your remix of ‘Candy’ is out now. Can you tell us what inspired the production of the track?
We originally made this track during the heyday of Dubstep, and we wanted to create a blend of melodic emotion and hard-edged sounds, which was a very different vibe from the original.
How did the collaboration between you and Melleefresh come about?
We first met Melleefresh on Twitter and made the original track together. She was hot off the trails of some big EDM hits, so we were already big fans. “Candy” was our very first collaboration together, which led to a full album and the first of many shows together.
Do you remember what inspired you to release a Dubstep version of this song?
Play Records asked us if we could make a Dubstep remix since we had just released some successful Dubstep tracks during that time. It was the heyday of those sounds, and we were at the forefront of the genre.
What’s your favorite element of the track?
I like the melodic elements, which make the track sound more ominous and otherworldly. The original is more playful and bouncier.
Which element of the song would you say is signature SpekrFreks?
The hard-grinding, wobbly bass is definitely the signature SpekrFreks sound.
Can you describe your remix of ‘Candy’ to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
Our remix of “Candy” is grinding, hardcore Dubstep with beautiful and haunting melodies.
How would you like people to feel when they listen to the song?
We would like people to feel like they’re overcome with emotion in another dimension when listening to the song.
What’s coming up for SpekrFreks?
We’re going back to our roots this year and putting out some classic Bay Area House Music with a SpekrFreks twist.
