Music Production 101 With Krista Mitsopoulou

Ever since the beginning of her career, Krista has built a genuine reputation for herself over the last years, off the back of her love for music since her childhood, combined with a plethora of vinyl that she holds dear to her. Since her time as a Producer, Krista has taken part in various local events with an array of musical groups in her home country of Greece, where she has played amongst other brilliant artists. Krista has developed an inimitable sound made up of uplifting beats and atmospheric harmonies, accompanied by her own enchanting vocals in some instances. We caught up with Krista to find out more about how she makes the music:

Hey! Great to have you here. How’re you doing?

I’m doing fine! Working on new projects and experimenting with new sounds.

Tell us about your current setup?

My setup currently consists of a controller that makes everything easier, a drum machine, a keyboard, a lot of VSTS and a microphone for the vocals.

What is the best bit of gear you own?

I think it is Cycles from Elektron, it’s a terrific drum machine.

Which piece of equipment do you use most?

I mostly use my controller which helps me reduce the time I am working on a project.

What DAW do you use?

I use the ‘Ableton Live’.

Who was your biggest inspiration to start making music?

I don’t have a specific inspiration. I was raised with Electronic music and I’ve been DJing since I was a student, listening to all kinds of Electronic genres, collecting and buying vinyl, CDs, downloading online when available. Electronic music is so familiar to my ears.

Best software synth?

I’ve been using Serum from Xfer Records a lot lately. I also use Mini from Arturia and Dune – Synapse.

How do you start a track?

The primary objective is to conceptualize the target audience and the mood the latter are on. After I decide this, I factor in how upbeat or soothing it will be. At that point, I have created the backbone of the track. Following this, I experiment with tunes and vibes which will lay the bedrock of the final calibration and polishing in order to get a final outcome without harsh spells of noise. At the end, I try to park the song for a few days and return to it with a fresh pair of ears and redo the polishing.

What is the one piece of advice you’d give to new producers?

Of course you don’t have to own a number of synths, drum machines and generally have a fancy studio to make music. You can create your own sound with just a laptop and a DAW. Equipment enables us to try different sounds and most times analog is better than digital, but today you can produce a wonderful track with only digital.

Where can we find your music?

The majority of my work can be found online on Soundcloud and Spotify.
